In the serene neighborhood of Parker, Colorado, this family sought to enhance their outdoor living experience by enhancing their decks with a covered, louvered room system. The homeowners had invested significantly in their property, cultivating a vibrant and welcoming full-acre yard with a large garden, pond, and wildlife.
They wanted to install a pergola over two exterior decks to maximize the enjoyment of their outdoor space. The decks were fully exposed to rain and wind and were south-facing, making them nearly unusable in the afternoon sun. The homeowners envisioned a structure allowing them to comfortably spend more time outside, whether for relaxation or hosting gatherings.

CHALLENGE:
The installation of two pergolas at this Parker, CO residence presented unique challenges, particularly due to their placement on the second and third-story decks, each with its own complexities.
Second Story Deck:
The primary obstacle for the second-story deck pergola was integrating it within the existing space, particularly since one side of the deck was clipped, which limited the available area. This constraint necessitated the extension of a post down to the ground, requiring the removal of the deck railing and additional structural support to meld the deck with the new pergola.
Third Story Deck:
The pergola for the third-story deck, accessed exclusively through the master bedroom, was intended to create a relaxing retreat featuring a hot tub. The compact area required a 10×10 frame and had limited access.
SOLUTION:
2nd story pergola solution:
The solution involved a comprehensive reinforcement of the deck’s perimeter to bear the pergola’s weight safely. All railings were removed to bolster the deck’s substructure, which then had to be meticulously integrated with the pergola’s posts, effectively restructuring the entire deck.
The Pivot 6 pergola was installed in three sections, all in beautiful bronze, and equipped with two fans, lighting, heaters, and a motorized screen on the west side to protect against the intense afternoon sun. This transformed an otherwise unusable patio into a comfortable outdoor living space.

The frame was constructed on the second story and then manually carried up ladders to its final destination due to the limited access to the deck. It was necessary to mount the frame directly onto the roof, with posts anchored securely to the main deck below.
This approach addressed the logistical challenge of installing a pergola on a third-story deck and ensured the structure was robust enough to withstand environmental stresses.
Both Pivot 6 pergolas were designed in beautiful bronze and featured the patented gutter system, diverting rainwater from the decks.
