Pulte Mortgage is a nationwide mortgage company that sought to enhance the outdoor experience at its Englewood, Colorado headquarters, which houses over 500 employees. With a commitment to creating a vibrant and welcoming work environment, the company boasts an impressive employee lounge and cafeteria. This indoor space, known for hosting various employee events ranging from birthday parties to happy hours, features large swing-out windows that blur the lines between the interior comfort and the beauty of the outdoor landscape.
Despite having a beautifully furnished outdoor seating area, it was underutilized due to its direct exposure to the southwestern sun. Recognizing the potential to transform this space into a more inviting and functional area, Pulte Mortgage Company wanted this commercial pergola installation to offer additional outdoor seating for employees. This would extend the usable space for outdoor employee gatherings and integrate the natural surroundings into daily work life, fostering a more engaging and enjoyable atmosphere.

CHALLENGE:
This pergola installation required compliance with city requirements for wind and snow load specifications. The process required StruXure of the Rockies to create multiple versions of design plans, each tailored to meet the standards set forth for structural safety and durability. Navigating through these requirements demanded a meticulous approach to design and engineering, ensuring that the pergola would enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of the outdoor space and stand up to the harsh weather conditions typical of the Denver, CO, region. StruXure of the Rockies assisted Pulte Mortgage Company with all the necessary formalities and addressed every detail with precision and care, from initial design concepts to the final approval stages.
This commercial pergola installation was fairly straightforward on an existing concrete pad, although due to the high wind exposure, a specialized foundation design known as “bell footings” was employed. This technique involves creating footings that are 14” wide at the top and then expand, or “bell out,” to a width of 36” three feet down into the ground, with the posts securely embedded within this concrete foundation. Such a design is crucial in areas prone to strong winds, as it significantly enhances the structural integrity of the pergola, ensuring it can withstand the forces exerted by the wind. This requirement for extra reinforcement highlighted the technical precision and innovative solutions StruXure of the Rockies brought to the project, ensuring the pergola’s longevity and reliability amidst challenging environmental conditions.
SOLUTION:
StruXure of the Rockies installed the 12’ x 30’ multizone Pivot 6 pergola in a beautiful Adobe color to blend perfectly with the existing aesthetics of the building and its surroundings. The Pivot 6 design includes standard adjustable louvers, allowing for effortless control over sunlight and wind exposure, and this commercial pergola was equipped with advanced rain and wind sensors to adapt to changing weather conditions automatically.
To address the challenge of direct sunlight and wind on the west-facing side, the pergola was equipped with MagnaTrack motorized screens, enhancing the comfort and usability of the space throughout the day. Lighting was included to add to the functionality of the space, allowing it to be used during the evening hours.
The Pivot 6 pergola is known for its commercial-grade durability and ease of use. Constructed from powder-coated, commercial-grade aluminum, it offers superior resistance against the elements, including high snow and wind loads, and is impervious to most hail damage. The thick structural material ensures sturdiness and longevity, with each unit custom-built to meet local load requirements.
