CHALLENGE:

Park officials were looking for an outdoor patio structure that would provide a consistently usable outdoor venue, allowing full enjoyment of the environment while protecting against the sun, wind, and rain when needed. They needed a solution that allowed a full view of the amazing scenery with a structure that could react quickly to high winds and rain that develop without a moment’s notice and disappear just as quickly.

The patio, which is attached to the event room, could extend floor coverage and provide shelter during inclement weather. The pergola had to be affixed to the existing brick building with the durability to hold up to rain and high winds, as the view was wide open without trees or other structures to block any oncoming winds.

Selling a venue for a wedding is a competitive and fickle endeavor. On the one hand, the wedding party finds the ability to have an outdoor area appealing, especially if it has a grand view. With that outdoor space, however, comes the risk of bad weather on their special day. Most people won’t risk a great view against the threat of ruining their day when all the guests get drenched or blown over. Building a venue that can provide the outdoor setting along with the assurance that it can be protected if needed makes for a much more valuable and sellable offering. In the highly competitive wedding venue market, that also allows for charging a premium for the space, and the space getting rented more frequently in the summer, thus providing a return on the investment for the City.

SOLUTION:

StruXure of the Rockies designed and installed a 20’ x 40’ bronze pergola with four zones and many accessories, including motorized screens, lights, and multiple ceiling fans. Our Pivot XL pergola features pivoting, adjustable, motorized louvers, which provide shaded protection against the blistering sun while allowing airflow on stifling hot days. The louvers close completely to protect against rainfall, and the internal gutters drain water away from the covered area. The Pivot XL is designed to handle heavy rains with 10” beams and 5” gutters.

Wind sensors were installed to automatically adjust the louvers with on-demand response to wind and rain. The Pivot XL is designed to hold up to hurricane-force winds, heavy snow, and hail. The fully extruded aircraft-grade aluminum design is hand sanded to receive a durable powder coating finish and is sourced solely from the United States aluminum manufacturers. The Pivot XL was attached with epoxy threaded rods to sturdily affix the StruXure to the building.

RESULTS:

Westminster City Park officials can justify the investment in their building with a product that produced a stylish design, features, and accessories that make the space usable year-round if needed and provide low maintenance care of the Pergola XL cover. A whole season of weddings and events is planned for the event room and attached patio, now protected with a beautiful, newly screened-in, shaded area without ruining their magnificent view. The entire installation was performed in one week, in June of 2022, just in time for the busy wedding season and rainy season in Denver.
